Report on Fortunecity.com

This is a series of reports on free web hosts from around the internet, rating them against each other in categories such as simplicity, compatibility and speed, to name a few. A list of the other reported on sites are available here...

1. Simplicity...

Getting set up and registered with Fortunecity.com was easy enough. You only enter in your email address at first and then they email the rest of the details to you, I suppose to verify that your email is a valid one. Setting up the site is fine, uploading the site( which is what I did ) is easy, there is very clear instructions on how to do so. As far as the online HTML editor is concerned, Fortunecity.com does have one but I never used it. It looks fine though, pretty much the same as all the rest. Most of these online editors are very much alike.

2. Compatibility

This site allows you to connect via HTML IDE ( such as Microsoft FrontPage ) which make it very easy to get started if you're used to using a particular editor and just don't want to have to learn how to use a new one. It also includes an internal editor for those whom have never used one before or just want to have a try of a new one.

3. Advertising & Shopping

The advertising isn't that bad, only one horizontal banner across the top of the webpage, advertising some of the paying customers' services. As I have mentioned in all my reports, none of the free web hosts give a shopping service ( i.e. where the web page can get collect credit card details etc ) but I presume that when you subscribe to the upgraded service, then a shopping option can more than likely be chosen.

4. Speed & Purity

I decided to run the web site I created with Fortunecity.com through a HTML validator, to test for speed and purity ( i.e. how many errors ). It was error free, but this is not really too reassuring considering that the site I tested was very plain and ordinary. Perhaps with a more complicated web page, filled with images and links etc would top up more of an error count. The speed of the site fine also, but the same applies to how simple the site was. It may have had more of a slow down if more was on the page.

Overall Fortunecity is a fairly good web host, its simple, quick & has a HTML editor included.     4/5
